A Little Friendly Competition?…

Wizzy wants the muscle-up. I want her to be able to do 5 strict pull-ups and dips.

It’s been almost a year ago since my still-a-baby-at-CFKT self walked into a 6:00 AM class and really, truly thought it was a joke when Caleb Gregory told me to do 7 minutes of burpees. Oh, the memories. I’m a year older now (boo), hopefully another year wiser (yay!)…which must mean: The CrossFit Games will soon be here again.

(If you don’t know me, insert excessive sarcasm for the next sentence.) As much I think I’ll be besting Crissy in toes-to-bar any day now (and I do…really, I do) I also recognize that my likelihood to represent our beloved CFKT in this year’s Games is still not 100% locked up. I found myself asking “If I’m not competing on THE team, why should I bother signing up for the Games?” Maybe you’re asking yourself the same thing. Well…I decided that I’m going to do it. Here’s why:

First, I remembered Sam’s post from a few weeks ago (http://crossfitktown.com/dev/two-in-a-row-the-times-they-are-achangin) and thought I’d follow her lead and show CFKT some love. Even if I finish in last place in the entire country, I’m cool with that. Someone has to be last, and I know I’m stronger now than I was about a year ago when I was lying on the floor after 7 minutes of burpees. As long as I try my best, I think that CFKT will be proud of me, so I should therefore be proud to be part of CFKT and register to support our collective CFKT-ness. Go team.

Second, even though I’m cool with being last, I hope I’m not. Yes, behind the sarcasm and self-deprecation lives a competitor. Sometimes. I’d like to see how I stack up among other people of similar age, across the country, blah blah blah. (If this is your first year, you’re 97% likely to have to do the workouts anyway, just FYI. Might as well see how you compare.)

Third: After talking with some other Ladies of 6:00 AM, I realized that they were feeling the same sentiment of “Why sign up if I can’t really win anything?” And…here’s where the friendly competition comes in. We’re all relatively equally matched in the gym. Yes, we all have our goats and we all have our faves, but overall we’re pretty much on the same level. We’re all going to sign up for the Games. We’ll do all the Games workouts and track our progress like the true competitors we are. The winner from our group will receive a bottle of wine from every other person! (I’m talking at least a $12.00 bottle or one that carries a Wine Spectator rating of at least 87. No 3-Buck Chuck. We have standards.)Β  Right now, we’re up to 5 people and the potential competitor / wine pool will hopefully continue to grow.

Since many of us don’t see each other, the coaches have agreed to help out and connect people to groups as they form or to assist individual people in getting one started. That’s it…so do whatever you want with it. Form your own group. Join one that forms. Get creative and come up with a reward that’s motivating and interesting for you.     Great post Judith! You have inspired me to sign up and form a group. Plus, it’s a great way to kick off my triathlon training.

    So here is the group I’m starting. “CFKT Masters” any male age 30 and over. $10 dollar buy in, then money will go to purchase an ACE hardware gift card for winner. Holla at me if you’re interested.

    LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!

    Each group should have a “leader board” so we can all encourage this friendly competition. I will totally make one for my group out of old school poser board from Walgreens. Its going to be awesome.

    Last year during the Open was the best camaraderie I’ve ever seen at CFK. It’s like the bonding we have during Death Days but for 5 weeks. It’s awesome and I promise every person that signs up that you won’t regret it.

    So sad we won’t be able to do a 7 minute burpee rematch Judith! I remember thinking and feeling the same way when I stepped into CFKT and never had more fun! It’s always nice to have someone who you workout with all the time or someone you haven’t met yet cheer you on to finish. The kids and I may have to do a few drop-ins to see and cheer everyone on.

    Judith, you are fantastic as always and now I have guilt… so I am thinking about it…however, I have to work an event the night of March 6th so I am wondering if you can be on a team if you are not able to make every workout. Please let me know your thoughts.

    You can do the workouts anytime that week. We will be doing them as a gym on Fridays, but if you have a scheduling conflict we can work around it.

    This is the best idea I think you have ever had Judith! For everyone else, even if you all aren’t in it for the wine you will surprise yourselves with the motivation a competition provides you with (PRs out the wazoo)! Like Dougie said there is also amazing camaraderie during the Open season.
