We as human beings spend every day of our lives yielding to various rules or authorities. Sometimes this is a good thing. We yield to pedestrians. We yield to oncoming traffic. We yield to our bosses. We yield to paleo bowel movements (not much of a choice with that one).

However, we get so used to giving in, to deferring to greater authority, that we have trouble recognizing when it’s time for us to throw up our middle finger, look over the edge of the cliff (metaphorically), and say F**k it.

Crossfit is one of the very few places you can go and throw your inhibitions to the wind every day. Football coaches love to say that football is the only place you can assault someone in front of several thousand people and get away with it. Well, Crossfit is the only place you can completely defy your own perceptions of what is humanly possible on a daily basis.

It is THE ONLY place where you can leave work and the other problems of your day and do something you may not have thought you could do. It could be a pull up, muscle up, ring dip, push up, snatch, it doesn’t matter. For one hour each day, the rules that every normal person lives by don’t apply to you. You can scream and yell, curse and cry, run, jump, sweat, and fall on the ground in exhaustion. In fact, all of those things are encouraged. This is a place your co-workers are probably scared (and a little jealous) of and think you’re crazy for associating with (I get that reaction every day from other law school students who just can‘t fathom what we do).

My message is this. Next time you think you can’t get that last rep, or you think you can’t finish that MetCon, stop thinking about how hard it is, and start thinking about each workout as a gift and an opportunity. Crossfit is the one place, where NO ONE can make you stop, NO ONE can make you yield…except yourself. If you do, I promise you will reap the benefits in the gym, and it may open your eyes to other experiences, as well.

Push forward, never look back, and enjoy the ride. In the words of the immortal film, Cool Runnings, “Peace be da journey.”

    Seriously though, well put. (On a related note, anybody watch the 1-hour+ documentary CF Journal posted on Mikko after he won the games? His attitude on “yielding” is pretty fantastic as well.)

    Wait…what are the charges? So inspirational I jumped right to decision. You are absolutely right on being your own worse enemy when it comes to crossfit. Some days I find that little voice being a little louder than other days. Thanks for the great post, and I look forward to getting my self back into the gym to work on that next big hurdle – mental toughness.

    Great post Tay Tay, as for the video, those island ruggers have been watching to many episodes of “Bring it on”, “Drumline”, and “You Got Served”. I should paint myself up, put on my best black thong, and lead the possums in a nice dance before our match this weekend.
