Work not for time
The following is a guest blog post from the member who has probably brought us the most new members to Ktown, Meghan Morgan. She is a brilliant individual with many ideas, and she has been on me about this one for a long time…
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a
listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all
of which have the potential to turn a life around.”—Leo F. Buscaglia
“Everybody likes compliment.” ― Abraham Lincoln
What do these quotes have to do with Ktown, you might ask? Well, I think it’s about time we have a way to express and encourage one another publically. I’ve been pushing for this for some time and now it’s happening! How you may ask? Well, in addition to the awesome high fives, pats on the back and cheering that go on daily around Ktown 3.0, the coaches are dedicating the white board near the cubbies as a “brag board” of sorts. Grab a marker and put up some encouraging words, great quotes, call out successes and small (or enormous) triumphs!!!
I already have a few ideas of what should go on the board. I’ll start out by writing “Way to go Sam!” Did you know Samantha Lane got her first muscle-up last Saturday and that she’s been getting them all week? Did you know she’s been working on a muscle-up for 2 years- always working to address that “goat”. I think that needs public praise. Not everyone sees Sam’s efforts every day but I think everyone should know of that success. Not only because she got it but because she’s been working on it- consistently.
I don’t see our competitors every day but I’d like to say “good luck” to them on the board. Give them a shout out for their consistent work.
Have you ever attended a 6 am class? I’ll use the board to give a shout out to Ktown’s early risers who get tons of work done and serve as a MetCon testing ground every day. Thank you for getting up, working out, and starting my day off with encouragement!
I’ll compliment the 6.30 p.m. folks for their efforts as the last class of the day to clean-up for us 6 am goers.
I’d give a shout out to Diva who rowed extra in a MetCon to work off that girl scout cookie- now that’s dedication.
Someone gets a new PR- throw it on the board!
New job? Promotion? New baby or marriage?- I think those are board-worthy!
I’d tell the folks in the skinny programing that they look AMAZING. I don’t know all of them but I see them around the gym and boy is their hard work paying off!
I’d use the board to challenge other gym members to all wear the most outrageous high socks they have on a given day and challenge the coaches to photograph all the socks for our blog. How fun and colorful!
I’d use the board to try to find other people who might be interested in side Paleo challenges, sharing recipes or doing extra burpee challenges (Kate B?!).
I’d use the board to introduce and welcome new members to the gym and challenge others to show them what “more than a gym” means!
Our brag board should be a place for challenge and praise and good humor. Now go use it!
