Warm-up: 3 minute AMRAP of 135/95lb Deadlift, Thrusters, and Power Cleans –
rest 1 minute between exercises
Wait… that’s the warm-up? Well it was for all competitors in the Oktoberfest games on Friday as the first WOD.
Forgive us for not posting yesterday, but every competitor was wrecked after that MetCon. Lower backs, hamstrings, and hands were demolished. Jordan came out with about five flappers per hand, Megan and Coach CBO with open wounds on shins, and everyone’s voices gone from screaming. Day two could only promise more of this fun-filled action. Day 1, or WOD 1, ended up with CrossFit Ktown showing strength in the men’s and women’s heats with several Ktowners scoring over 100. Coach CBO scored the highest of us with 119 and was only a few reps behind the lead scorers.
So what about day 2? The first MetCon began at 8am in which each competitor had to complete 3 rounds of an 800m run and 50 kettlebell swings (53/35lbs), and with lower backs already being sore this MetCon only added to the pain. Once again Ktown showed up for this MetCon, with Brandon and Coach G posting some great scores (sub- 14 minutes by a long way) with ALL unbroken swings, and Miss J getting second in her heat. After this MetCon, Ktowners were in good position with Miss J in 6th overall, Megan in 12th, Coach CBO in 12th, Brandon in 7th, Coach G in 16th, Jordan in 31st, and Forrest in 32nd. And don’t let those numbers fool you, there were approximately 60 males competing.
With all MetCons being run in heats, it felt like no time before the next one began at noon. This “Festive 40″ MetCon consisted of a nasty little chipper of 40 reps of push-ups (chest-to-ground), sand bag squat cleans (50/30lbs), 18” box jumps, KB sumo-deadlift high-pulls (53/35lbs), muscle snatch (45/45lbs), and jumping back squats (45/45lbs). This was definitely different for Ktowners with never having practiced sand bags squat cleans. Yet, mid-MetCon for Miss J and Megan the commentator shouted, “You all better check out this CrossFit Ktown. They seem for real.” Yep that’s right… we are for real, and all our members know it! Brandon rocked this MetCon with a sub-9 minute score, and Coach G finished close behind in his own heat with 9:12. Forrest and Coach CBO were neck and neck in their heat and finished with a good score bumping them up in the standings. Megan got the spirit award in this chipper after falling on the box jumps and scraping her shin. Blood may have been streaming down her leg, but she finished and was then constantly congratulated by fellow CrossFitters.
And finally the last MetCon, the surprise MetCon of Oktoberfest…The Morel.
20m Tire Drag (115lbs)
21-15-9 Ammo Box Push Press (50/30lbs)
This MetCon proved to be rough as the very last one of the games. It was made to simulate a war hero’s struggle in the heat of battle. In Megan’s heat an epic battle ensued between her and another CrossFitter from Florida. Megan came from behind to beat this girl, pulling like a madman in the tire drag! Forrest proved to be sandbagging in the first MetCon after posting a crazy time of 8:29 in The Morel, one of the best all day. Coach CBO and Coach Miss J got to go together in this one, giving high fives when they passed each other on the run.
All in all, Oktoberfest was a great time full of Icy Hot, Neosporin, protein powder, and cheers. As of now the overall standings aren’t known except for top 3 men and women, but are to be posted soon on the Oktoberfest site. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some Ktowners in the top 10. A special thanks goes out to Doug and Blake who were snapping pictures like their lives depended on it and updating the twitter site. Another thanks goes out to all other Ktown supporters who were here screaming their brains out, and of course our members who cheered us on from home.
Time for an ice bath,
The CrossFit Ktown Coaches
